Family medicine physicians specialize in meeting the primary health care needs of families.  Instead of specializing in only one medical area, family physicians are trained in all major medical areas from Pediatrics to Internal Medicine to Gynecology, including Prenatal and Baby Care.  Of course, no Doctor can specialize in everything, and family physicians general refer patients to Specialists in 10 to 15 percent of their cases.

Family medicine is the medical specialty which provides continuing, comprehensive health care for the individual and family.  It is a specialty in breadth that integrates the biological, clinical and behavioral sciences.  The scope of family medicine encompasses all ages, both sexes, each organ system and every disease entity.

Osteopathic medicine is a complete system of health care with a philosophy that combines the needs of their patient with the current practice of medicine.  Doctors of Osteopathic medicine (D.O.'s) practice a whole-person approach, which means they consider both the physical and mental needs of their patients.

What do D.O.'s and M.D.'s have in common?  Both are physicians and they are both licensed by the state and specialty boards.  They both have four year-undergraduate degrees with an emphasis on science courses and both complete four years of basic medical education.  In fact, both D.O.'s and M.D.'s:

 

Choose to practice in a specialty area of medicine, such as Surgery or Obstetrics. Complete a Residency Program, which typically takes 2 to 6 years of additional training. They are equal in the eyes of the law.

They must pass comparable state licensing examinations. They practice in fully accredited Hospitals and Medical Centers. They can order medical tests and procedures. They must maintain a prescribed level of continuing education units to remain certified.
